Meth activity on the rise after short-lived decline

The DEA reports that meth seizures have risen steadily the past three years and are again at 2006 levels. The DEA cites two problems that have contributed to the increases.

First, users and dealers have gotten around tough regulations on the over-the-counter drug pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in homemade meth. The drug is kept behind the counter, and anyone buying pseudoephedrine, in medications such as Sudafed, must present identification and can purchase only a limited amount. Meth producers have been paying individuals to buy as much pseudoephedrine as they can, according to the DEA.

Second, according to the DEA, Mexican drug cartels have ramped up meth production.
